JOHANNESBURG – South African police say the minister of tourism survived an attempted carjacking outside his home.
Police spokeswoman Noxolo Kweza said in a statement on Thursday that hijackers tried to take Minister Derek Hanekom’s official vehicle.
She said that Hanekom was entering his home in a Johannesburg suburb on Monday night, when three men approached his driveway. An armed man came close to the car and ordered his driver out.
Police said Hanekom’s bodyguards exchanged fire with the carjackers. Police found a pistol at the scene, which was dropped by one of the hijackers.
Kweza said Hanekom and his protectors were unharmed, although the vehicle was slightly damaged. The men escaped and police said they have no leads yet.
The spokeswoman said it was a random crime.
